M.J. Ryan Wisdom for Tough Times

M. J. Ryan is one of my favorite authors, and a well regarded personal coach. Each of her books is a treasure trove of practical advice, most often woven around concept of the importance of having an attitude of gratitude.

In challenging times, having an attitude of gratitude is not always easy. In fact, it can be downright very difficult.

How does one have an attitude of gratitude when ones retirement account has lost, for example, 50% of its value?

How does one have an attitude of gratitude when one has just been terminated from their job?

How does one have an attitude of gratitude when one's business revenue is down, for example, 30% and profits have turned to losses?

All around us, people are experiencing these kinds of pain. Some will respond with personal depression, even thoughts of suicide; while others will soldier on with their attitude of gratitude shining bright.

In her book, Attitudes of Gratitude, M.J. reminds us that:
"gratitude births only positive feelings - love, compassion, joy and hope. As we focus on what we are thankful for, fear, anger, and bitterness melt away, seemingly without effort."

The key to creating the attitude of gratitude is to get crystal clear on all you do have, rather than on what you no longer have.

I am fortunate in that my attitude of gratitude is reinforced every day because of the fact that my wife and I have chosen to care for Scotty, a multiply disabled man who lives with us and has taught me so much. As I watch Scotty deal with his disabilities, and all the while wear such a beautiful smile, I can't help but to be reminded about just how blessed I am...to be able to see...to be able to walk...to be able to talk. Etc. Etc.

What about you? Is your attitude of gratitude shining brightly?

Are you a beacon of strength and compassion for your family, friends and co-workers?

I am absolutely convinced that those who prosper most in these tough times will be among those whose gratitude is abundant...even when things aren't going their way.
